What happened on this day -- the little man with big dreams became the head honcho on this day as Napoleon became dictator of France in 1799. In 1858, the world first heard the wonderful music of the New York Symphony Orchestra as it performed for the first time. I have no idea where it could have possibly been hiding, but the giant panda was discovered living in China on this day in 1927. Cartoonist Al Capp created Sadie Hawkins Day on this day in 1938. The idea was for all the eligible young ladies to pursue young gentleman on this day with marriage in mind. The idea was a hit, and two years later, more than 200 colleges in the nation where already holding Sadie Hawkins events. Sugar Ray Leonard retired for the first time on this day in 1982, only to re-emerge again in 1984, for a few years only to retire again, then come back again in 1991.
